Psychology of colors, The Kitchen

By Joey Lewitin

Colors effect on the subconscious mind has been studied by psychologists for many years. While they`re findings indicate that colors effect is not the same on every society, they have found that within a single society, color can have generalized, and powerful, subconscious effects. By educating oneself as to the nature of color and how it is perceived in your own society, you can harness its full power when decorating a space; creating settings that not only impress, but actually uplift people`s emotions from the inside out. The following are the general effects of color on the perceptions of Americans, and some tips on how to use these colors to influence the minds of the people in your kitchen in a positive manner. It is always important when studying such effects, to pay attention to your own reactions, as your individual feelings may not fall into the mainstream nature of this overall society.

Orange
is a color that is heavily associated with eating, feeling full, and even overeating. Its presence in many shades tends to create hunger in people. Many restaurants use light red or orange lighting in order to stimulate the appetite of its customers. This makes orange a perfect color for the kitchen. You could implement it in subtle powerful ways, like purchasing adobe serving dishes, or orange fringed utensils. You could also use it in overt ways such as painting walls or doing your floor in an orange stone color. Orange trim along the walls is also a nice touch. While this color is ideal for kitchens, you dont want to overdo it. Large amounts of orange can be irritating to the eyes, especially if it is a strong orange color. Orange also tends to illicit heat, and in the kitchen there is already generally too much heat.

Red
is a more intense version of orange. It inspires hunger, and heat, but also violence and passion. It is an extreme color that tends to cause Americans to feel things in extreme ways. Choosing small red accents in a kitchen is a good way to create hints of motivation and elevate the subconscious feelings of hunger you are trying to create. However, you want to avoid this color in large quantities, as it may cause overheating or anger in the room.

Blue
is the opposite of orange and especially red. It actually represses the urge to eat, and makes a room feel cooler. There is not very much blue food in nature, and so we have developed a natural aversion to eating when we see it. For this reason it is probably a good color to avoid in such a scene.

Black
naturally absorbs heat, making any space warmer. This may again be a problem in a kitchen. Further, black tends to shrink spaces making them feel smaller. Unless you have a very large kitchen, you are probably already a little pressed for space, and don`t need a color choice making the area even worse.

Earth tones
are great for kitchens. These colors, such as tans and browns, can create a sense of closeness and warmth. The feeling of ease and belongingness will make the kitchen a room that you can feel safe to create in. It will also ease interaction between the different parties that may gather in there occasionally.

The setting that we are in has a strong influence on our subconscious minds. Color is a big part of any setting. While color does not have an inherent effect on us, as a society we do develop certain reactions to different colors. By using these colors in a planned way, you can help to influence the undercurrents in a setting.
