Rooms in the Canadian hotels do not meet sanitary standards
The CBC conducted journalistic investigation and found out that the most of hotel rooms in the large Canadian cities, such as Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, do not meet sanitary standards.
The sanitary condition was analysed in 54 rooms of economy class hotels - EconoLodge and Super8, business class hotels - Best Western and Holiday Inn and elite hotels - Fairmont and Sheraton. The research was led by microbiologist Keith Warriner, University of Guelph. "I wasn`t expecting [bacteria] to be so prolific," he said. "I was really surprised at the lack of sanitation. [Maids] make it look nice, but [they`re] not making it sanitary, which is totally different."
The most contaminated places are mixer taps in the bathrooms, television remote controls, blankets and bedspreads. However, as the researchers note, the metal doors in hotels were cleaner than expected. Experts mentioned that the main reason of poor sanitation of hotel rooms is too heavy workload of maids. So, to clean one room, they take only 30 minutes. At this time, they can clean 15-16 rooms per day. In such a short time it is impossible to clean the room qualitatively.
